Explore the Wild Side of South Goa After Dark
When the sun sets over the Western Ghats, the forests of Mollem undergo a dramatic transformation. While most travelers experience Goa's wildlife sanctuaries during the day, the majority of the region's most fascinating creatures are actually nocturnal. Our Group Forest Night Trail is a curated experience that takes you into the heart of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary ecosystem to witness this transition firsthand.
This activity is not a high-speed adventure or a safari; it is a slow-paced, educational, and immersive nature walk. It is specifically designed for those who appreciate the smaller details of the jungle—the glint of a spider's eye, the rhythmic call of a nightjar, or the camouflaged scales of a pit viper resting on a branch.
The Mollem Ecosystem: A Biodiversity Hotspot
Mollem is situated at the foot of the Anmod Ghat, serving as a gateway to the lush forests of the Western Ghats. This area is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is home to an incredible array of flora and fauna. During the night, the forest becomes a theater of activity. Predators like the Civet Cat and the Slender Loris emerge to hunt, while various species of owls and nightjars take to the sky.
For many, the highlight of the trail is the chance to see herpetofauna. Goa is famous for its reptiles and amphibians. Depending on the season, you might encounter the Malabar Pit Viper, the Hump-nosed Pit Viper, or various species of tree frogs and caecilians. Our guides are trained to spot these well-hidden creatures without disturbing their natural behavior.
What to Expect on the Trail
The experience begins at a designated meeting point near the Mollem National Park checkpost. After a brief introduction and safety orientation, the group sets off on foot. The trail follows established paths to minimize our impact on the environment while maximizing our chances of sightings.
The Itinerary
- Arrival and Briefing: Meet your naturalist guide at 6:30 PM. You will receive a briefing on how to use the provided flashlights, how to move quietly, and the safety protocols regarding wildlife encounters.
- The Walk: We cover approximately 2 to 3 kilometers of forest terrain. The pace is slow, with frequent stops to observe and discuss the biology of the creatures we find.
- Observation: Your guide will use specialized spotting lights to point out wildlife. For larger groups, guides use portable voice amplifiers to ensure everyone can hear the educational commentary without having to huddle too closely.
- Conclusion: The trail ends back at the starting point around 9:00 PM or 9:30 PM, leaving you enough time to head back for dinner.
Why Choose a Group Trail?
Traveling in a group is not only more cost-effective but also provides a shared sense of discovery. Our group night trails are particularly popular with school and college groups, photography clubs, and families with older children. Having multiple sets of eyes often leads to more sightings, and the presence of an expert naturalist ensures that the experience remains safe and educational for everyone involved.
Best Time to Visit
The experience of the forest changes significantly with the seasons:
- Monsoon (June to September): This is the peak time for amphibians and reptiles. The forest is vibrant, loud, and teeming with life. Be prepared for rain and leeches (we provide gaiters if necessary).
- Post-Monsoon & Winter (October to February): The weather is pleasant, and the forest is still lush. This is a great time for spotting mammals, arachnids, and roosting birds.
- Summer (March to May): While the forest is drier, visibility is often better. It is an excellent time to spot scorpions (using UV lights) and larger nocturnal mammals that frequent water sources.
Safety and Ethics
Safety is our primary concern. While the forest contains venomous snakes and other wildlife, your naturalist is trained in wildlife behavior and first aid. We maintain a strict no-touch policy. We do not handle animals, and we do not use flash photography in a way that distresses the wildlife. Participants are expected to stay with the group and follow the guide's instructions at all times.
Practical Information for Travelers
Difficulty Level
The trail is rated as Easy to Moderate. The terrain is mostly flat but can be uneven, muddy, or slippery depending on the weather. A basic level of physical fitness is required to walk for 2 hours.
What to Wear and Carry
- Footwear: Sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes or trekking boots are mandatory. Sandals or flip-flops are not allowed for safety reasons.
- Clothing: Wear full-length trousers and long-sleeved shirts to protect against insect bites and thorny bushes. Neutral colors (greens, browns, greys) are recommended.
- Essentials: Carry a bottle of water, any personal medication, and a raincoat during the monsoon.
- Insect Repellent: While we provide basic repellent, feel free to bring your preferred brand.
Transport and Parking
The meeting point is easily accessible via the Panjim-Belgaum Highway (NH748). There is ample parking available at the sanctuary entrance. If you are staying in North Goa (Calangute/Baga), expect a 1.5 to 2-hour drive to reach Mollem. We recommend hiring a private taxi for the return journey, as public transport and app-based cabs are difficult to find late at night in this area.
