Explore the Hinterlands of Sangod
Located approximately 60 kilometers from the capital city of Panjim, Sangod serves as a gateway to the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and the rugged beauty of the Western Ghats. This overnight package is designed to move you away from the commercial beach belts and into the quiet, forested interior of North Goa. The experience focuses on the Mhadei River, a vital water source for the region, known for its clear waters and calm flow during the post-monsoon and winter months.
The Night Trekking Experience
The core of this adventure is the 4-kilometer guided night trek. Walking through a tropical forest after dark is a completely different experience than a daytime hike. Your guide, typically a local naturalist familiar with the terrain, will lead you through a canopy of teak and bamboo. The focus here is on nocturnal biodiversity. You will likely encounter various species of amphibians, unique insects, and if you are quiet, perhaps a glimpse of small mammals like the civet or the slender loris.
The terrain is moderately challenging, involving some uneven forest floors and slight inclines. It is not a high-altitude climb, but it requires steady footing. We provide headlamps or torches, though we encourage trekkers to use them sparingly to allow their eyes to adjust to the natural moonlight, enhancing the sensory experience of the forest.
Riverside Camping and BBQ Dinner
The campsite is situated directly on the banks of the Mhadei River. This is a rustic camping experience, focusing on the environment rather than luxury. We provide sturdy weather-proof tents and sleeping bags. The highlight of the evening is the riverside campfire and BBQ. Unlike standard hotel buffets, the meal here features local Goan preparations. You can expect a variety of marinated meats and vegetables grilled over charcoal. The menu typically includes local fish, prawns, or mutton, along with vegetarian staples like paneer and grilled corn. This is a time for the group to sit back, share stories, and enjoy the sounds of the river flowing nearby.
Morning River Activities: Kayaking and Tubing
After a traditional Goan breakfast the next morning, the focus shifts to the water. The section of the Mhadei River at Sangod is classified as Class 0-1 rapids, meaning the water is calm with very little turbulence. This makes it an ideal environment for kayaking and river tubing, even for those who have never been in a boat before.
- Kayaking: We use sit-on-top kayaks which are stable and easy to maneuver. You will spend about 1.5 hours paddling along the riverbanks, observing the birdlife that frequent the water's edge.
- River Tubing: For a more relaxed experience, tubing involves floating down the gentle current in large, reinforced inner tubes. It is a social activity where the group often stays together, enjoying the cool water.
- Swimming: The river depth in this area averages between 3 to 5 feet, making it safe for a refreshing dip under the supervision of our safety guides.
Why Travelers Choose This Activity
Travelers opt for the Sangod camping trip because it offers a multi-activity itinerary in a single booking. Instead of organizing a trek, a meal, and water sports separately, this package integrates them into a seamless 20-hour experience. It is particularly popular with small groups of friends, couples looking for a quiet getaway, and corporate teams seeking a bonding exercise in a natural setting. The limited group size (maximum 12 people) ensures that the forest remains quiet and the guides can provide individual attention.
Difficulty and Fitness Levels
This activity is rated as Moderate. While you do not need to be an athlete, you should be comfortable walking 4 kilometers on unpaved trails. The kayaking is gentle and does not require significant upper-body strength. It is beginner-friendly; our guides provide a full safety briefing and basic paddling instructions before you enter the water. Non-swimmers are welcome, as high-quality life jackets are mandatory for all water-based sections.
Safety and Equipment
Safety is our primary concern in the wilderness. We provide all necessary technical gear, including CE-certified life jackets, kayaks, paddles, and trekking lights. Our guides are trained in basic first aid and are familiar with the local flora and fauna, including which plants to avoid. The campsite is equipped with basic sanitary facilities. We maintain a guide-to-guest ratio of 1:6 to ensure everyone is accounted for during the night trek and on the river.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal window for this experience is from October to March. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the forest is lush following the monsoon, and the river water levels are perfect for kayaking. December and January can get surprisingly chilly at night in the hinterlands, so a warm layer is recommended. We do not operate the full camping and night trek package during the peak monsoon (June to August) due to safety concerns regarding river levels and slippery trails.
What to Pack and Wear
To ensure a comfortable experience, we recommend the following:
- Footwear: Sturdy trekking shoes or sneakers with good grip for the trek. Avoid flip-flops or sandals for the walking portion.
- Waterwear: A pair of quick-dry shorts and a T-shirt for kayaking. Carry a towel and a change of clothes.
- Protection: Insect repellent is essential for the forest. Sunscreen and a hat are useful for the morning river session.
- Personal Items: A small backpack, a reusable water bottle, and any personal medication. If you have a preferred headlamp, feel free to bring it.
Location and Transport
The activity starts and ends in Sangod, North Goa. Please note that Sangod is a remote village and is not well-served by public buses or app-based taxis like GoaMile. We recommend self-driving or hiring a private taxi for the duration of your trip. There is ample free parking available at the meeting point. If you require assistance with transport, it is best to book a reliable local taxi service in advance to ensure a timely arrival for the 4:00 PM start.
Booking Information
Advance booking is mandatory as we limit the group size to maintain the quality of the experience. The package price includes all activities, equipment, and meals (Lunch, BBQ Dinner, and Breakfast). Alcohol is not provided, but you are permitted to bring your own for the BBQ session; however, we insist on responsible consumption, especially before the night trek. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions (e.g., vegan or gluten-free) at the time of booking so we can prepare the meals accordingly.
