Once you are geared up with a life jacket, you will head to the water. For beginners, the instructor typically handles the launch through the initial surf. Once you reach the deeper, calmer water, you take control. You will have a designated zone in which to operate, ensuring you stay away from fishing nets and shallow rocks. If you prefer a bit more challenge, the afternoon (3:00 PM to 5:00 PM) usually brings a slight chop, which makes for more exciting wave jumping.

What to Wear and Carry

Since you will definitely get wet, swimwear or quick-dry athletic clothing is essential. Avoid heavy cotton clothes like jeans, as they become heavy and uncomfortable when wet. Water shoes are helpful for walking on the sand, but most riders prefer to go barefoot on the jet ski. Do not wear expensive sunglasses or jewelry unless they are securely strapped; the ocean has a way of claiming loose items.
