This 2-day certified course takes place in the calm, protected waters of Bambolim Bay, located in North Goa. Unlike the rougher surf found on the northern beach belt of Calangute or Anjuna, Bambolim provides a mirror-like surface for much of the season, making it the ideal classroom for young beginners.

The course utilizes the Laser Pico, a world-renowned training dinghy. It is tough, simple to rig, and incredibly stable. Because the boat is designed for training, it can be handled by a single child or shared by two, allowing for a flexible learning environment based on the child's confidence level.

What Your Child Will Learn

Day 1: Fundamentals and Boat Handling

• Parts of the Boat: Learning the vocabulary of sailing, including the mast, boom, rudder, and tiller.
• Rigging: How to prepare the Laser Pico for the water, including hoisting the sail.
• Wind Awareness: Understanding where the wind is coming from and how it affects the boat.
• Land Drills: Practicing steering and tacking (turning the boat) on a simulator or on the beach before hitting the water.
• Initial Launch: A shallow-water session to get comfortable with the movement of the dinghy.

Day 2: Sailing and Safety

• Points of Sail: Learning how to position the boat to travel in different directions relative to the wind.
• Steering and Trimming: Developing the coordination to steer with one hand and manage the sail with the other.
• Capsize Recovery: A controlled drill where kids learn that tipping over is a normal part of sailing and how to easily right the boat.
• Basic Navigation: Following a simple course marked by buoys.
• Assessment and Certification: A final check of skills followed by the presentation of the completion certificate.

The Laser Pico is the industry standard for junior sailing. It features a high boom, which provides more head clearance for kids, and a durable polyethylene hull that can handle the occasional bump against the shore. Its simplicity allows children to see the immediate result of their actions—pull the sail, and the boat goes faster; move the tiller, and the boat turns. This immediate feedback loop is essential for effective learning.

Safety Protocols and Supervision

Safety is the primary concern for any water-based activity involving children. This course maintains a low student-to-instructor ratio (typically 4:1) to ensure every child receives individual attention. A motorized rescue boat is always on the water during sessions to provide immediate assistance if needed. All participants are required to wear high-buoyancy life jackets at all times, regardless of their swimming ability.

The sailing season in Goa runs from October to May. For kids, the morning sessions (usually starting around 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM) are recommended as the winds are lighter and the sun is less intense. During the monsoon months (June to September), the course is generally suspended due to high winds and heavy rainfall.

Difficulty Level

This is a beginner-level course. No prior sailing experience is required. While basic swimming skills are helpful for confidence, they are not strictly mandatory as the life jackets provided are designed to keep the child afloat effortlessly.

What to Wear and Carry

• Swimwear or Rash Guards: Quick-dry fabrics are best. Avoid heavy cotton t-shirts.
• Sun Protection: Waterproof sunscreen and a hat with a chin strap.
• Footwear: Water shoes or old sneakers that can get wet (essential for protecting feet from shells).
• Towel and Change of Clothes: Facilities are available for changing after the session.

Logistics and Transport

The activity is located at Bambolim Beach, which is roughly 15-20 minutes from Panjim and 45 minutes from the Calangute/Baga area. If you are staying in North Goa, we recommend hiring a private taxi for the duration of the course, as app-based ride services can be inconsistent in this specific area. There is ample parking available at the resort entrance for those driving themselves.
