Exploring Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary by Jeep
The Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of approximately 211 square kilometers in the Sanguem Taluka of South Goa. It forms a vital corridor between the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary to the north and the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary to the south. This safari is the most efficient way to cover the rugged terrain of the sanctuary, which is characterized by thick forest cover and steep gradients that are inaccessible to standard vehicles.
During this 2 to 3-hour safari, you are accompanied by a local naturalist who helps identify the various species of flora and fauna found in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The safari is conducted in an open-top 4x4 jeep, allowing for 360-degree views of the canopy and forest floor, which is essential for birdwatching and photography.
Why Travelers Choose the Netravali Safari
Most visitors to Goa spend their time on the beaches, but those looking for a quieter, more ecological experience head to Netravali. Here is why this activity is a preferred choice for nature enthusiasts:
- Biodiversity: Netravali is home to a wide range of endemic species, including the Malabar Giant Squirrel and various rare amphibians.
- Climate: The forest canopy provides a significant drop in temperature compared to the coastal towns, making it a refreshing morning activity.
- Unique Geological Features: The sanctuary is home to the 'Bubbling Lake,' a rare natural phenomenon not found elsewhere in the state.
- Off-Road Adventure: The route involves navigating forest trails and stream crossings that provide a genuine 4x4 experience without being overly intense.
The Phenomenon of the Bubbling Lake (Budbudyachi Tali)
One of the primary stops on the safari is the Budbudyachi Tali, or the Bubbling Lake. Located near the Gopinath Temple, this small pond is famous for the continuous bubbles that rise from the lake bed. While local legends offer various stories, the scientific explanation involves the release of methane and other gases due to decaying vegetation beneath the surface.
Visitors often observe that the bubbles increase in intensity if you clap or create a rhythmic sound nearby, though this is often attributed to acoustic vibrations affecting the gas release. It is a quiet, contemplative spot surrounded by ancient trees and a small local shrine.
Waterfalls of Netravali: Savari and Mainapi
The sanctuary is famous for its perennial waterfalls. Depending on the season and trail conditions, the jeep safari usually includes a visit to the vicinity of either the Savari Waterfall or the Mainapi Waterfall.
Savari Waterfall is a multi-tiered cascade. While the jeep takes you deep into the forest, reaching the base of the falls may require a short walk. The water is cool and clear, originating from the high peaks of the Ghats. Mainapi Waterfall is slightly more remote and is often visited by those looking for a more secluded experience. Please note that during the peak monsoon, access to the base of these falls may be restricted for safety reasons.
Wildlife and Flora of the Western Ghats
Netravali is a haven for birdwatchers. Keep your binoculars ready for sightings of the Malabar Pied Hornbill, the Crested Serpent Eagle, and Goa’s state bird, the Ruby-throated Yellow Bulbul. The sanctuary is also a major habitat for the Malabar Giant Squirrel (locally known as Shekru), which can often be seen jumping between the high branches of the Teak and Terminalia trees.
While larger mammals like the Indian Gaur (Bison), Leopard, and Sloth Bear inhabit the sanctuary, they are elusive and sightings are rare. However, your guide will point out tracks and signs of wildlife activity along the forest floor.
Difficulty Level and Physical Requirements
This activity is classified as Easy to Moderate. The primary physical requirement is the ability to withstand a bumpy ride in a 4x4 vehicle. The forest tracks are unpaved and can be jarring at times. There is minimal walking involved, usually limited to short 10-15 minute trails to reach the Bubbling Lake or waterfall viewpoints. It is suitable for families with children and elderly travelers who are comfortable with off-road travel.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time for the Netravali Jeep Safari is from October to March. During these months, the weather is pleasant, the forest is still lush from the monsoon, and the animal activity is at its peak.
- Morning Slot (8:00 AM): Highly recommended for birdwatching and cooler temperatures.
- Afternoon Slot (2:00 PM): Better for those who want to see the play of light through the canopy, though it can be warmer.
During the Monsoon (June to September), the sanctuary is exceptionally beautiful, but some trails may be closed due to heavy rainfall and safety concerns. It is always best to check availability during this period.
What to Wear and Carry
To ensure a comfortable experience, we recommend the following:
- Footwear: Sturdy walking shoes or sneakers with good grip. Avoid flip-flops.
- Clothing: Lightweight, breathable cotton clothes. Neutral colors (green, brown, khaki) are better for wildlife viewing.
- Protection: Sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent are essential.
- Gear: A good pair of binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens.
- Hydration: While water is often provided, carrying an extra reusable bottle is recommended.
How to Reach Netravali
The meeting point for the safari is typically the Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary Entry Gate. This is located approximately 50 km from Margao and about 80 km from Panjim.
Note: Public transport to this area is very limited. It is highly recommended to hire a private taxi or drive your own vehicle. Mobile network coverage is extremely poor once you enter the Netravali village area, so ensure you have downloaded offline maps or have clear directions before starting your journey.
Important Booking Information
The number of jeeps permitted inside the sanctuary is regulated by the Forest Department to minimize ecological impact. It is advisable to book at least 48 hours in advance, especially during weekends and public holidays. The entry fee for the sanctuary is usually paid at the gate or included in your booking package, depending on the operator.
