Overview of the Nemo Island Experience

The Nemo Island Trip is not your typical tourist boat ride. Departing from the Sinquerim jetty, located near the historic Fort Aguada, this trip uses a dedicated sailboat known as 'Nemo'. Unlike the large, noisy trawlers used for mass dolphin spotting, the Nemo offers a quiet, wind-driven experience (with engine backup) that allows you to appreciate the Goan coastline without the crowds.

The journey takes you toward a secluded sandbar or island, typically near the mouth of the river or slightly offshore depending on the season and tide. The focus here is on privacy, relaxation, and active water sports. Because the boat accommodates a maximum of six guests, it remains an intimate experience suitable for those who value their own space.

The Sailing Route and Sightseeing

Your journey begins at the Sinquerim Beach area. As you set sail, you will get a unique vantage point of the 17th-century Fort Aguada and its lighthouse. This stretch of the coast is known for its rocky outcrops and occasional dolphin sightings, though dolphins are a natural bonus rather than a guaranteed show. The sail to the island takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour, during which you can learn the basics of sailing from the skipper or simply relax on the deck.

Activities at the Island

Once the boat reaches the uninhabited sandbar, it anchors a short distance from the shore. Guests usually wade through waist-deep water to reach the beach. The island itself is a minimalist natural feature—expect a clean stretch of sand with limited natural shade and no commercial establishments.

Snorkeling and Marine Life

The crew provides basic snorkeling gear. While Goa is not the Maldives, the waters around these rocky islands offer decent visibility (usually 5 to 10 meters) during the peak season. You can expect to see small reef fish, crabs, and various species of marine plants. The skipper acts as a guide, ensuring you stay in the safest areas with the best visibility.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)

One of the highlights of the Nemo trip is the inclusion of a Stand-Up Paddleboard. The calm waters in the lee of the island make this an excellent spot for beginners to try paddleboarding. It is a quiet way to explore the perimeter of the sandbar at your own pace.

Food and Refreshments

A standard trip includes a picnic lunch served on the island. The menu typically consists of sandwiches (veg cheese or egg mayo), fresh seasonal fruits like oranges or bananas, cookies, and fruit juice. Bottled water is provided throughout the trip.

Optional BBQ Upgrade: For those looking for a more substantial meal, a portable BBQ can be arranged with 48 hours' notice. This includes marinated chicken or fish, corn on the cob, and salads cooked fresh on the island by the skipper. This upgrade typically extends the trip duration by about an hour.

Suitability and Difficulty

Difficulty Level: Easy. This is a leisure-focused activity. While you need to be mobile enough to board a small boat and wade through shallow water, no high-level fitness is required.

Family Friendliness: This is one of the most family-friendly boat trips in North Goa. The water near the sandbar is shallow (2-4 feet), making it safe for children aged 5 and above. The crew is experienced in handling families and provides life jackets in various sizes.

Non-Swimmers: Swimming skills are not mandatory. High-quality life jackets are provided, and the water activities take place in areas where you can often touch the bottom.

Best Time to Visit

The best window for this activity is from October to May. During these months, the sea is calm and the water visibility is at its peak. During the monsoon (June to September), this trip is generally unavailable due to rough sea conditions and the disappearance of seasonal sandbars.

What to Wear and Carry

• Swimwear: Wear it under your clothes as there are no changing rooms on the island.
• Sun Protection: A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential as there is significant sun exposure on the boat and beach.
• Footwear: Flip-flops or water shoes are ideal.
• Towels: Bring your own towels as they are not provided in the standard package.
• Dry Bag: Useful for keeping your phone and camera safe during the transfer from the boat to the shore.

Location and Transport

The departure point is Sinquerim Beach, near the Taj Fort Aguada. There is a public parking area nearby, but it can get crowded during weekends. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure. If you are staying in Calangute or Candolim, a local taxi is the most convenient way to reach the jetty.

Safety and Facilities

The Nemo is equipped with all mandatory safety gear, including lifebuoys and life jackets. The skipper is trained in first aid and water safety. Because the island is uninhabited, there are no permanent toilets. For the comfort of guests, the crew carries a portable toilet tent that can be set up upon request.

Important Booking Information

This trip is tide-dependent. While we offer standard slots at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, the exact timing may be adjusted slightly to ensure the sandbar is accessible and the water is calm. It is advisable to book at least 3-5 days in advance, especially during the December-January peak season, as the boat only takes one or two groups per day.
