A secluded, rocky pocket cove hidden along the Anjuna cliffs, prized for raw coastal isolation and dramatic tidal rocks.
Monkey Beach is an untamed, rocky pocket cove hidden beneath the rugged laterite bluffs north of Anjuna. Completely removed from the busy shack lines and nightlife venues of the main coastal strip, this secluded inlet offers absolute quiet and unspoilt natural scenery. The cove is visited mainly by intrepid backpackers, coastal hikers and independent travellers who are willing to navigate the rough footpath down the headland in exchange for privacy. There are no commercial amenities, sunbeds or loud beach bars here; the environment is defined entirely by the rhythm of crashing waves, weathered boulders and wild cliffside flora. It serves as a solitary retreat where visitors can escape commercialised tourism, read among shaded rocks, and take in dramatic coastal vistas across the open Arabian Sea.
The cove features a narrow, wedge-shaped tract of coarse sand bounded by craggy laterite headlands and steep, scrub-covered hillslopes. Massive sea-sculpted boulders lie scattered across the intertidal zone, creating natural breakwaters and deep tide pools. During incoming high tides, the sea inundates nearly the entire sandy floor, transforming the shoreline into a dramatic amphitheatre of surging white foam and thunderous breaking surf against the reddish rock shelves.
Shielded by jagged cliffs, this quiet cove has never witnessed permanent coastal settlement. Decades ago, overland budget travellers discovering Anjuna explored these secluded gullies looking for peaceful wilderness camping spots, preserving its reputation among backpackers as a wild, untouched haven along the coast.

Capture striking seascapes featuring wave-battered volcanic boulders, deep clefts in the cliffs and vivid coastal evening skies.
Perch atop the natural stone terraces in the late evening to observe the brilliant red sun dip beneath the Arabian Sea.
The dry season brings stable weather, low ocean swell and safe footing on the cliff path. Midday can become very hot without artificial shade.
During the monsoon: Between June and September, ferocious monsoons create massive waves that completely submerge the cove. The steep dirt track down the cliff turns slick and dangerous to traverse.
Crowds: The rugged access path keeps visitor numbers extremely low; you will likely have the entire cove to yourself or share it with just one or two other hikers.
Best time of day: Late afternoon for milder sunshine, longer shadows and spectacular sunset vistas.
Swimming: Not recommended. Hidden submerged rocks, strong crashing shore breakers and sudden drop-offs make swimming hazardous here. Confine water activity to wading in shallow rock pools during low tide.
Lifeguards: No lifeguards are stationed at Monkey Beach; the area is isolated and completely unpatrolled.
Facilities: There are no facilities of any kind. No shacks, sun loungers, toilets or drinking water are available, so visitors must carry everything they need.
Accessed by following an informal footpath from the cliff tracks north of Anjuna. Two-wheelers can be left at the edge of the headland dirt track, followed by a steep, rocky 10-minute scramble down an unpaved trail to the sand.
